The Lori family mourns the tragic loss of one of our earliest champions, Karandeep Singh Dhillon, Director of SS Dhillon in Kenya. We wish to express our great sympathies and condolences to his family and community. Lori is forever grateful for his vision and contributions to the logistics sector in driving efficiency, visibility and optimization. Karandeep was one of the first to see the potential in our business when the model was still unproven, and his support was instrumental in helping Lori move from an idea into reality. Three years later, the platform he championed has moved billions of dollars of goods across 10 countries with 1,000s of truckers. Without Karandeep, this journey could not have been possible. We celebrate his life as an entrepreneurial innovator and dear friend.
May he rest in peace.

Earlier today, a press release was issued in Mandarin by a Lori investor in regards to our fundraising activities. Subsequent unofficial translations of the release into English mischaracterized our Series A raise, so we wanted to take the opportunity to clarify. Lori concluded a (to date unannounced) Series A raise for an undisclosed amount. It was led by Hillhouse Capital and Crystal Stream Capital, with participation from partners at DST, EchoVC, Timon Capital, Raba, Ryan Peterson (CEO of Flexport), Iyinoluwa Aboyeji (founder of Flutterwave, Andela) and Endeavor — among others. We are so excited to partner with these incredibly supportive investors, who are joining us on our drive of accelerated growth- all with the intention of revolutionizing logistics across Africa to bring down the costs of goods. We are thankful for their tremendous contributions and look forward to the road ahead!

For many African economies, promoting trade is a top priority. Rightfully so, considering its potential snowball effect on the economy.
When trade flourishes, it sets off a virtuous circle, a country’s goods enjoy ready market, producers and the entire value chain benefit and growth spreads out. However, turning this vision into a reality still remains a challenge. Trade remains depressed below optimum levels. This despite sustained investment in smoothening movement of goods. Over the years, billions of dollars have gone into interconnecting the continent by expanding existing roads, railways, air and waterways while building new ones.
The rollout of infrastructure…

Last week I had the privilege of presenting at KiCon, one of the largest global conferences for hardware developers, in Chicago. I presented on the difficulties in importing parts for logistics to Kenya to build custom hardware. For example Kenyan custom charges $50 for the task of opening a parcel to examine the contents and determine duties payable even before charging the duties themselves, this is called Import Declaration Fee. This fee is designed for containers but is applied to DHL parcels as well; making import of parts punitive. There are also…
